Ishmael's Whale Story

Ishmael's Whale is named after the narrator of the classic novel Moby Dick by Herman Melville.  "Call me Ishmael," is the famous first sentence of Moby Dick.  Ishmael being the lone survivor of the fateful voyage of the whaling ship, the Pequod, captained by the doomed Ahab in his search for the white whale, Moby Dick.

Ishmael describes the fascination that moved him to go whaling thus:

"Chief among these motives was the overwhelming idea of the whale himself.  Such a portentous and mysterious monster roused all my curiosity.  Then the wild and distant seas where he rolled his island bulk; the undeliverable, nameless perils of the whale; these, with all the attending marvels of a thousand Patagonian sights and sounds, helped to sway my wish."

The whale lives in many myths and legends from around the world and they still weave a magic fascination over us.  There is even a white humpback whale that visits the eastern coastline of Australia called Migaloo that attracts many ardent whale watches and media attention.  Moby Dick is one of my favourite novels and so I have dedicated this toy to this classic of western literature.

Ishmael's Whale is currently available in three cotton fabric variations: New Bedford Stripe, Indian Calico and Nantucket Blue.  On one side is a combination of two designer cotton fabrics, while on the other is grey cotton velvet.  Ishmael's Whale is detailed with hand sashiko stitching and button eyes.

Dimensions: length is approximately 28cm (11 inches) and is 19cm high (7 1/2 inches) from base to tail.  Ishmael's Whale is weighted to stand independently.
